Teaching has gone through so many phases throughout the history. By the time passes, different approachs, methods, techniques, goals etc arose and it’s still continuing. Well then, do we know what are the characteristics of 21st Learning? In this post, I want to share the background characteristics of 21st Century Learning.
There are key words about 21st Century Learning. Look at the world cloud:

“21st Century Learning” cares learner more than teacher. The important thing is the need of a student and her/his abilities. Teacher should know the characteristic and abilities of students and teach according to their level.
Lessons are learner-centred instead of teacher-centred. In class, teacher and students learn together. Teacher must be the guide. In old teacher-centred classes, teacher is the only authority and students must listen their teacher silently. However, in learner-centred class, students ask everything they want and even they try to understand, solve the problem individually or with a group with the help of the teacher so that students are in the hotspot of the lesson.
Group work is also a crucial point in 21st Century Learning. Group work enhances students’ collaboration and ability of problem solving. They solve and understand something with interaction.
Technology should be used to facilitate learning. According to the researches, most of the students are visual learners so technology supplies visuals, multimedia supports, developed systems that helps learning. It can cause better learning.
21st Century Learning based on 4Cs. What are 4Cs? Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Critical Thinking. These abilities must be acquired by students. Acquiring these abilities are more important than memorising subjects that teacher explains in the classroom. Traditional learning just causes forgetting but acquiring 4Cs helps to learn outside class. For example, a child who can think critically can learn something at home by evaluating a situation, reading, solving a problem or anything attracts her/him and then she/he can think about it deeper because she/he is creative. Shortly, it means students learn with real life content. This is what we want in 21st Century Learning.
In conclusion, we teachers and teacher trainees must leave the traditional teaching and modernise our teaching habits to have a better future with bright brains.
