Learning in the Globalized Century: 21st Century Learning

A timeline showing the Historical Development of Technology Integration in Language Education

In 21st Century, we have been using technology easily with its all opportunities. What about the past? Have you ever wondered how was technology integrated to Education? What were the milestones of the development of technology in education?

After the Industrial Revolution, hundreds of researchs were conducted and a lot of innovations came into human life. Technologic researchs were as fast as never before. Until the 1940s, technology has never been used for educational purpose. Before this year, technology was mainly used for military purposes because of the World War 1. Actualy in 1940, there is nothing about education but a milestone that started to inspire technology use in education. What was that? Cryptographic translations. You can say what’s the relation between this and education? Well, cryptograhers started to translate mechanical things with the help of technology during the World War 2, translating something via technology provided insight for researchers to investigate on how can technology be used for language teaching? First researchs about CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) continued until 1950.

Thanks to studies about technology use in education, in 1950s, the first electronic library named “The Brown Corpus of Standart American English” was published. In addition, some simple CALL programs were invented.

In 1960s and 1970s, Hevioristic CALL dominated the academic society. It was based on habit formation, resembled structural behavorism and the audio-lingual method.

By the end of the 1970s, in the first half of the 1980s, first microcomputers that allows some reading-writing exercises and language games were invented. This invention is one of the most important milestones of technology use in education because it was a big reform for that time so it caused to characterise these computers as “teacher in a machine”.

1990s are more important for us because in these years, internet connection and desktop computers were invented. They allowed us to use online dictionaries, multimedia language programs and so on. Furthermore, the first step of modern technologic media and developed devices, fast internet connections has been founded.

To sum up, our extremely developed and developing technology completed these phases in its integration into teaching. We teachers and teacher trainees must understand the importance of our time’s opportunities to facilitate learning better. Hope, all of us have good times to teach with technologic opportunities.
